Kainen received his B.S. in Physics and his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Arkansas in 2016. As an undergraduate, he was involved in condensed matter theory research focused primarily on the study of two-dimensional black phosphorus.
Kainen is currently working with Dr. Ryan Ogliore to analyze the isotopic compositions of cometary IDPs using a variety of sample preparation techniques and NanoSIMS measurements.
